Working From Home: The Future of Work or a Temporary Curse?

As these odd times continue to go on, there seems to be one thing that has stayed relatively constant; working from home. Many people have differing opinions on the matter but we’d like to dive a bit deeper.

At Virtual CFO it’s probably clear we support working from home, but why is that?

We support working from home because we believe it’s something that everyone needs whether they know it or not. In today’s world, being away from your family for most of the waking day is the norm. But why is that? This often ends up costing people more in time, money, and stress, yet most employers won’t consider letting people work remotely.

By even working from home part of the time there are so many benefits:

1. You’ll save money

If you’re an employee commuting from the suburbs to downtown you’re likely spending a large position of your money just getting to and from work as well as on parking. In addition, if you have kids or pets you need to pay for childcare or dog walking because of being gone for most of the day.

Now, if that isn’t bad enough, imagine you’re a business owner spending exponential amounts of money just to lease or own a space in a downtown area just because it’s what everyone else does in the industry. Instead you could be running your business virtually and saving that rent money! Alternatively, you could even go partially virtual and utilize local “hot desks” part-time.

2. You’ll save time

Time is something that none of us will ever have enough of so why do we waste it sitting in traffic for hours? Instead, we could be at home already starting our work days and finishing early to spend time with family or friends. You could even work a longer day to take a Friday or Monday off.

3. You’ll reduce your stress

Recent studies have supported the idea that working from home can increase productivity and decrease stress. People who work from home have an easier time eating healthy and striking a manageable work-life balance. Eating healthier and having more time to spend with your family can help you feel less stressed, which will make for a happier and more productive workday.

4. You’ll reduce your carbon footprint

With travel restrictions, cities locked down, and factories brought to a halt around the world due to COVID-19, reports indicate that nitrogen dioxide and carbon emissions have dropped in several countries including China, South Korea and Italy. This is because people are off the roads and only driving when necessary. Even if everyone only worked from home part-time there would be a significant drop in carbon emissions globally.

So how do you feel about working from home? Is it something that has worked for you? We’ve found that many people who thought they would dislike it have actually thrived and become even more productive.
